Budget cuts to the Air Force's Titan IV space launch vehicle program in the FY '97 defense appropriations bill would delay Milstar launches by one to two years, the Pentagon says.
In its markup of the FY '97 DoD Appropriations Bill, the House Defense Appropriations Committee cut $83.8 million from the $489.6 million budget request for Titan IV. The Senate slashed the Titan IV request by $101.3 million.
Launched from the Titan IV rocket, Milstar is a secure, jam-resistant communication satellite system built by Lockheed Martin for the military. Two of the six Milstar satellites have already been launched.
