In 1908, a group of horse-drawn wagons made its way across the South Dakota prairie. A century later, 54 wagons rumbled across the very same route--but with rubber tires and comfy car seats to cushion the ride.

South Dakota residents retraced the historic route along the trail from Fort Pierre to Deadwood, S.D. More than 200 people of all ages turned out for the 17-day ride.

Early settlers used the trail to reach Deadwood, a gold-mining town. The trail stopped being used in 1908, after railroads started transporting, or moving, people between the cities.
