Aug. 3--From a component-assembly line in Cherry Hill, N.J., a Japanese electronics powerhouse is making a new assault on the U.S. laser printer market.
In mid-July Okidata, a U.S. subsidiary of Japan's Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd., launched the Okipage 4w printer that broke the $300 price barrier for a black-and-white laser printer. The new printer retails for $299, or $50 lower than the next-cheapest laser printer, from Brother.
It's designed for the home or small office -- a market that's expected to boom in the late 1990s and early next century with telecommuters and home-bound laidoff workers.
