THE convention begins with a procession of glitzy bands, soul singers and rock-and-rollers. It continues with a party, the sort that all conventions have, with supporters wearing pictures of their man emblazoned on their shirts, and some with his image on their earrings. Throughout the week he will be praised a thousand times, in platform speeches and (more exuberantly still) in drunken late-night sessions.
