This engaging scholarly work offers a sweeping history of education conducted in the home from the colonial period through the present. It charts the evolution of domestic instruction from a familiar practice actively encouraged by government into the modern home-schooling movement, for which teaching children at home was something akin to an act of political protest. Gaither rightly includes the colorful figures on the political left and the religious right whose writings helped to stimulate contemporary home schooling's incredible growth, yet his is no history of great men. ...
