Network Rail said this week that it was looking to deal directly with its second tier contractors in a bid to introduce more competition and efficencies to the railway market.

The rail operators director of infrastructure investment Simon Kirby told NCE this week that industry consolidation was "a concern" for the business as it ramped up its spending over the next five years.

"We are looking to broaden our supply chain in civils away from some of the major contractors to engage with second tier suppliers," he said.
