More even than the author, the publishers of this hefty volume deserve to be congratulated. as does the BBC for broadcasting the television programmes devised and written by Simon Schama from which his book partly derives. The whole enterprise is a triumph of chutzpah and confidence by all involved. Great risks were taken and an enormous challenge has been issued.
