Tim Stiffler, a longtime hotel owner in Virginia Beach and beyond, expected clouds this summer. Not from the sky, but from the economy.
Now, tourism officials from the Outer Banks to Williamsburg are sighing with relief that their businesses didn't fare worse this year. Most key measurements - hotel occupancy, revenues and average daily rates for rooms - look about the same as last year, not up much but not significantly down, either, for June through August.
