Surveys show that most youths drink before they are Sable to do so legally. In 1993, the Monitoring the Future Study, a national survey of American school students, showed that 76% of twelfth graders and 69% of tenth graders drank alcohol in the past year (Johnston et al., 1993). Local surveys have shown even higher rates of consumption. For example, an analysis of four large surveys of eleventh graders in Ohio showed that 87% of boys and 82% of girls drank alcohol (Pascale and Sylvester, 1988).
