Positioned at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar majestically dominates the entrance to the Mediterranean sea. Its name is derived from the Arabic "Jebel Tarik" (meaning Tarik's mountain), a legacy from Berber Tarik ibn Zeyad, who landed on the southern end of Gibraltar in the beginning of the Arab invasion in the 8th century. Although it was recaptured by the Spanish in 1462, they lost it again to Britain in 1704 during the War of Spanish Succession. Spain closed its doors to Gibraltar, increasing restrictions at the border and eventually cutting off all means of communication in 1969.
