Lawrence Snyder's index of lieder will be especially useful to singers and accompanists. Its roughly 9,800 songs are, according to the author, locatable "by an industrious library patron." Accordingly, the intention has not been to be as exhaustive as possible, but to index songs the scores of which singers can actually get hold of and perform. For example, there are 131 settings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Erlkonig listed in Werner-Joachim During's Erlkonig-Vertonungen (Regensburg: G. Bosse, 1979-77), yet only fourteen of them are in this index. The author provides helpful suggestions for finding the scores: libraries remain the best source, but he has many other ideas ...
