It is difficult to overestimate the position Hans Werner Henze has carved out for himself in contemporary music. With significant contributions to virtually every genre (eight symphonies, a number of large-scale operas, choral and orchestral works, and a plethora of chamber music), he has done so not by creating a system and disciples to follow it (thus setting himself apart from many of his Darmstadt colleagues), nor by being eclectic (in the way of, say, Luciano Berio, Michael Tippett, and composers using the "collage" technique), nor by hanging his musical output on a particular political philosophy - although he has, of course, done many of these things at various stages ...
