Aug. 16--Target Stores is looking at building a store in downtown Minneapolis, city officials in Minneapolis announced Thursday.

The discount chain, owned by Minneapolis-based Dayton Hudson Corp., has "indicated their intent to pursue negotiations" with Minneapolis-based Ryan Cos., according to a statement issued late Thursday by the office of Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton.

"We've always been interested in downtown Minneapolis," said Target spokeswoman Gail Dorn. She confirmed that her company is negotiating with Ryan Cos. to build a two-story, 120,000-square-foot store along the west side of Nicollet Mall between Ninth and Tenth streets.
