Aug. 14--Genzyme Corp. of Cambridge yesterday became the first Massachusetts biotechnology firm to receive approval for a second major drug when the Food and Drug Administration gave the green light for the company to begin marketing Seprafilm, a coating to prevent post-surgical adhesions.

Aimed at the estimated 3.1 million surgical procedures performed in the United States annually, the coating is designed to prevent the formation of internal scar tissue, or adhesions, after surgery. The formation of adhesions in the abdomen can, in some cases, lead to small bowel obstruction or problems with the ovaries or fallopian tubes that can impair fertility.
