Tax on second homes set to double except for MSPs.

NATIONALIST tax plans could see bills double for those with second homes - apart from MSPs and ministers.

First Minister Alex Salmond's proposals to replace council tax with a 3 per cent local income tax include giving councils the right to levy an additional charge on second homes.

At present, holiday-home owners pay 90 per cent of the council tax rate for their second home.

But councillors in areas where holiday homes are most common want second-home owners taxed, not at a reduced rate but at double the normal rate.

That would push the bill for a Band D second property in the Highlands from ?1,047 to ?2,094..
