Antennas, like line-operated power supplies, often get little respect or consideration in design, perhaps because they don't process signals, manipulate data bits, or consume power, as active circuitry does. Or, perhaps, designers are uncomfortable dealing with antennas, which, in EMI/RFI-sensitive designs, radiate or capture energy rather than confine or shield against it.
Yet, good antennas, or "aerials," at the transmitter and receiver are vital. The right antenna can increase performance and overcome coverage weaknesses at little cost and with no increase in power consumption. You may even be able to reduce transmitter power by using a better antenna ...
