Pathmark Gains Financing for East Harlem, N.Y., Supermarket.(Originated from Daily News, New York)

Aug. 20--Pathmark's long-stalled plan to build a supermarket in East Harlem got a major boost yesterday with the approval of a $1.5 million loan from the state.

The low-interest loan by the Empire State Development Corp. will allow the company to break ground on the controversial $15 million project in October, officials said.

Pathmark has wanted to build a 53,000-square-foot store at 125th St., between Lexington and Third avenues, for several years but has faced intense community opposition and financing problems.

State officials yesterday, however, praised the company for its efforts and its help in revitalizing Harlem.
