No other Northwest poet of comparable achievement has written as much as Kenneth O. Hanson about places other than the Northwest. Of the poets in Five Poets of the Pacific Northwest , editor Robin Skelton notes that Hanson "appears to range the farthest afield for his subject matter" (xvii). In 1964, Hanson had just returned from his first visit to Greece, and Richard Hugo was about to leave for Italy. Skelton shows Hanson, the traveler, with poems about Mexico, Taiwan, and Japan, and new ones about Greece, as well as some Chinese translations.
