The book under review is the outcome of the Fifth International Workshop on Indonesian Studies held at the KITLV at Leiden in 1990. Most of the contributors to the present volume have participated in the Halmahera Research Project which was established in the mid-1970s in order to promote ethnological, historical and linguistic research on the North Moluccas. However, as the 'Beyond' in the title indicates, not only the North Moluccas but also the Central and South Moluccas are covered.
