Numerous studies (Baumeister, Hawkins, & Cromwell, 1964; Collier, 1970; Jakubczak, 1967; Moskowitz, 1959; Price, 1976; Sclafani & Rendel, 1978; Treichler & Hall, 1962) have shown that activity increases as body weight decreases with food deprivation. For example, Moskowitz (1959) showed that a linear relationship emerged between activity level, measured as revolutions per hour, and percentage of estimated normal body weight after rats had lost 10% to 15% of normal weight. The correlation between body weight and revolutions between 60% and 90% of ad-lib body weight was -0.99.
