Though the trend is to a casual open space, some buyers insist on a formal room.
In the dining room these days one size does not fit all. The trend in new-home design is to one of two styles - a formal, separate dining room (pictured on the next page) or an informal dining area that is part of a great room (illustrated here)
Before you design, you must know your target market. Move-up buyers, especially on the East Coast, want a formal dining room. However, according to Professional Builder's 1996 Consumer Survey, first-time buyers prefer a great room with a dining room because it does not take away from the size of the family room.
