The environment is one leg of the Democrat's Triple Crown for their 1996 issue message against Republicans.
The other two are education and Medicare.
While Republicans are dismissing Democrats as "Johnny/Janey One-Notes," it is a simple message - and focused messages are what matter most in politics.
Republicans should not be lulled into a false sense of security by findings that, as the most important problem facing the country, the environment is consistently mentioned by only a trace - usually no more than one or two percent.
But it is easy to see why Democrats are tempted. Polling shows that while voters believe the country has "lost ground" ...
