Ready to party? Political parties are groups of people who share common political beliefs and goals. Political parties nominate, or name, candidates for local, state, and national elections. They also raise awareness about problems they believe the government needs to address. The two major U.S. political parties are the Democratic and Republican parties.
Democratic Party
The Democratic Party is the country's oldest existing political organization. It was formed in the 1820s. From 1828 to 2004, Democrats won 20 of the 45 presidential elections. The party is represented by a donkey.
