For years, urologists and their patients hailed the advent of nonsurgical therapies for problems associated with an enlarged prostate gland--the male woes known as BPH, for benign prostatic hyperplasia. The No. 1 BPH prescription, Abbott Laboratories' Hytrin, worked by relaxing the smooth muscle in the prostate gland. The top challenger, Merck's Proscar, shrank the prostate by blocking a hormone. The two therapies were so popular that their makers agreed to a head-to-head comparison. The result was remarkably one-sided.
