Aug. 27--Netscape Communications Corp. today launches an independent subsidiary designed to take the ubiquitous Navigator Internet browsing technology to a new, potentially huge market of consumers -- people wary of personal computers and more apt to buy into interactive uses for televisions and telephones.

Most important for advocates of the so-called "network computers," the new company, Navio Communications Inc., is further evidence that the concept can be made to work. Network computers are inexpensive -- around $500 -- have little internal memory, and take users straight to interactive Internet sites.
