Oct. 2--The good ol' days sounded appetizing Wednesday to Reno County Commission Chairman Larry Sharp. As a young officer for the Hutchinson Police Department in the early 1970s, Sharp helped dispense meals to the incarcerated. Frugality reigned, Sharp told his fellow commissioners.
Breakfast consisted of oatmeal, two slices of toast, and one cup of coffee. Lunch presented an option: An apple or an orange?
If a prisoner complained, Sharp said, he received neither -- and no supper, either. When the hungry prisoner was presented the choice of an apple or orange the following day, he would tack on a "sir" to ...
