The Coast Guard is working with the Navy to craft requirements for new cutters capable of meeting service missions well into 21st century, according to a Coast Guard official.

The new ships would replace 41 high- and medium-endurance cutters of the Hamilton, Famous and Reliance classes. The three classes--the largest vessels in the Coast Guard inventory--entered service in the 1960s and 1970s and are slated for replacement starting around 2010 in what could be a multi-billion dollar program.
