Suburban it may be, but the idea of musical authenticity seems to be alive and kicking, not to say disturbingly influential, in the world of popular-music studies. In their very different ways, Brian Cross - self-presented as an insider, though not a native, of Los Angeles hiphop culture - and Cecelia Tichi - avowedly a country-music fan-come-lately - both set out to form their readers' musical taste, to establish the "true" history of the genres they discuss, and (in so many words) to codify the norms of authenticity by which they believe specific works within those genres should be judged. ...
