Much of the early History of the Ba'th, both as a political party and an ideology, remains shrouded in mystery.(1) Among the more mysterious of the figures of this era is that of Zaki al-Arsuzi. While he is acknowledged to have been one of the Ba'th Party's founders and one of its major thinkers, there is very little scholarship, especially in the West, on his thought or its relationship with Ba'thist ideology. Michele Aflaq is usually considered to be the founder of the Ba'th Party, as well as the founder of Ba'thist thought. While Aflaq's writings have been studied by numerous authors, the work of Arsuzi has so far been ignored by Middle East scholars.(2)
