THE decision taken by the national executive committee of the ANC to oust Thabo Mbeki has created the possibility of a split within the ANC. This is unlikely to happen soon but if it were to happen the new ANC faction could garner significant support.
Mbeki's resignation has changed the face of politics in South Africa. He commanded significant support in at least two of South Africa's provinces - the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape. In other provinces, the popularity gap between himself and Jacob Zuma is too close to call. He perhaps also commands the support of the middle classes.
