Transportation
Madrid has a strong rail system, well-developed roads and a rapid and efficient transportation system to and from the Madrid-Barajas International Airport, the IOC says. The city's subway system has 318 stations, including one that would stop at the Olympic Stadium. The airport, six miles from the Olympic Village, has the capacity to handle 46 million passengers per year. Madrid plans to spend $8.7 billion on transportation upgrades and construction regardless of whether it gets the games.
