India's Taj Mahal is said to be a monument to love, built by a 17th-century Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, as a mausoleum for his third and favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. For much of the world, the Taj Mahal is India. Every year, millions of tourists make the trip to Agra in Uttar Pradesh to visit the white marble mausoleum, many from overseas. In 1983, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated the Taj Mahal a World Heritage site, calling it "the jewel of Muslim art in India" and a "universally admired" masterpiece. It is everywhere instantly recognizable, perhaps the world's most famous monument.
