NEW YORK - How does one revive a designer name that's been virtually dormant for a decade, but that still has a high recognition factor?

That was the challenge facing Carmine Porcelli last May when he joined Tropic Tex International, a $350 million sportswear firm here that owns the Halston trademark for all products except fragrances and cosmetics. French Fragrances owns the Halston scents.

Halston International became a separate company about nine months ago, said Porcelli. Its principals are Mark Setton, who is also a principal of TTI, and his brother Jack Setton.
