The case against trans fats is compelling and irrefutable: They are bad for you.

The National Academy of Sciences put it bluntly in a 2005 reference work on nutrition, noting that unlike other fats, trans fats are not necessary to our diet and have "no known benefit to human health."

Trans fats have been proven to increase the risk of coronary heart disease by lowering the level of "good" cholesterol and increasing the level of "bad" cholesterol in the blood. The New England Journal of Medicine estimated that eliminating trans fats from American diets could reduce heart attacks by up to 19 percent.
