Toronto Operetta Theatre's performance of The Mikado Apr. 23 was a mixed blessing. One didn't just want to hear Sullivan, one wanted to hear Gilbert, too. Here, though, the diction, especially among the women soloists and the chorus, made it difficult to follow Gilbert's words. There were problems in the pick-up orchestra, too, although overall this Mikado was a triumph. Conductor David Speers pulled off one of the best-modulated and nuanced readings of a G & S score I've heard. Well-known tunes sounded fresh, and the orchestra took on a new lease of life with Speers' musical accents. This production brimmed with vitality.
