In a world of diet colas, low-calorie desserts, and sugar-free chewing gum, artificial sweeteners have become widely accepted. In fact, they are so popular that the generic names of certain sweeteners--such as saccharin and aspartame--are recognized by the general public.
But the leading aspartame producer--Monsanto's NutraSweet Kelco--is expected to face tough competition soon. Potential competitors are at the gate awaiting FDA approval for various sugar alternatives.
