THE construction sector is set to suffer a further dramatic collapse next year, a new report spells out starkly to the Government.

House completions will once more nearly halve by a year-on-year comparison, warns the detailed assessment by independent consultants Davy Kelleher McCarthy.

Output will slump from 43,000 units projected for this year to just 25,000 homes completed in 2009, Environment Minister John Gormley has been told.

Last year there were 78,000 completions, indicating the sheer scale of the housing sector collapse.

The two-thirds drop in activity will be accompanied by wholesale lay-offs.
