The HAWK air defense system last week intercepted a tactical ballistic missile in a test at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., service officials said Monday.
Friday's test marked the sixth in a series of HAWK theater missile defense experiments using both Lance missiles and air-breathing drones. Four HAWK interceptors were launched against two Lance tactical ballistic missiles. Only one Lance was successfully engaged and destroyed, BMDO said.
"The interceptors failed to destroy the second Lance target," BMDO added.
A detailed analysis of the intercept failure is underway, service officials said.
