Sep. 7--The parent of Pittsburgh-based Bayer Corp. said yesterday that it was spending $45 million to expand and modernize its veterinary medicine production facilities in Shawnee, Kan., as part of its plan to grab 10 percent of the U.S. market for animal-health products.

"But beyond our domestic market, our new Shawnee operations also will enable us to help meet the animal-health product needs of our NAFTA partners, Canada and Mexico," said Helge H. Wehmeier, Bayer Corp.'s president and chief executive officer.

Bayer will concentrate all of its U.S. veterinary operations at Shawnee as it moves to boost its U.S. market share.
