In the last few years, powerful GIS software has been developed to link digital maps and databases into an integrated information management system. One Long Island, New York, water district is seizing the opportunity to create a GIS that will enable more effective long-range planning of its maintenance and capital expenditures as well as improved emergency response.
The South Huntington Water District comprises about 225 miles of water main within a 20-sq mile area in Suffolk County. Underground aquifers supply water to the district through 17 plant sites, some of which include large ground storage tanks. The water district serves about 15,000 customer locations.
