Publisher gets millions for risky revamp
Seven years ago, when he was the publisher of PC Magazine, Eric Hippeau met a fast-rising Japanese computer entrepreneur named Masayoshi Son. At the time, Mr. Hippeau was looking for a Japanese licensee for PC Magazine and Mr. Son was instantly intrigued.
"I explained to him that we take products, test them, and write about them - something that had never been attempted in Japan," says Mr. Hippeau, who is now chairman of PC Magazine's Manhattan-based owner Ziff-Davis Publishing Co. "Right away he asked, 'How can I do this?'"
