Taking back the islands: native Hawaiians' claims for sovereignty.

Native Hawaiians began a movement in the 1970s to win sovereignty over some of their ancestral land, which has gained momentum since the 1993 centennial of the US overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom. A recent sovereignty referendum was stayed by a federal judge, but the movement will not likely be stopped.

When a traveler looks down at the twinkling seas and emerald cliffs, it's hard to imagine a more idyllic place than Hawaii. But it's a different story on the ground, where protest signs line roadways and the Hawaiian flag flies upside down. Hawaiians want their islands back.
