Social class and self-esteem.

An attempt was made to determine the relationship between self-esteem and social standing, using measures of self-esteem by Coopersmith, Lipsitt and Rosenberg. The 711 participants' social standing was measured based on data on paternal employment, ranging from professional occupations to unskilled manual occupations. Results show that the degree of relationship between social class and self-esteem varied according to which measure of self-esteem was used, with the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory indicating the strongest relationship between self-esteem and social class.
