The new axiom, not as time-tested as the old, is nonetheless accurate: As sure as there is death and taxes, it takes an innovator molecule for a new genetic to be born.
From this perspective the current golden age of generics could have been foreseen.
Blockbuster discoveries in the late 1970s, '80s and '90s of statins, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and glitizones, among others, foretold the growth of genetics, since the innovator brands would eventually lose patent protection.
What was once a potential generics percentage of total prescriptions filled in the 40's has moved into the mid 60's and is pushing 70.
