* Water is often referred to as "the universal solvent," which means almost everything is soluble, to some degree, in water. This property causes "pure" water to become contaminated by any material it comes in contact with.
These contaminants can be grouped into four categories: microorganisms, organic materials, turbidity, and dissolved inorganic materials.
Each of these contaminants produces a somewhat different effect when found in water used in humidifiers.
