THE British are remarkable for having produced no great composers in the 200 years which separates the music of Purcell, who died in 1695, from that of Elgar (and some, like George Bernard Shaw, may well wonder how great he was). But on the evidence of this year's BBC Promenade Concerts-the 72nd and final one of this season will be on September 14th-the British have had a full share of fine composers born in the 20th century. The Proms feature more contemporary music than any other major music festival, and much of the best of it this summer has been British.
