frequent outbreaks of recurrent genital herpes can significantly benefit from taking famciclovir (Famvir(R), SmithKline Beecham) to prevent these outbreaks, according to a new study. The trial results were reported today by Dr. Francisco Diaz-Mitoma at the 36th annual meeting of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in New Orleans.
In a multicenter, placebo-controlled trial, significantly more patients with frequently-recurring genital herpes treated daily with famciclovir did not develop culture-confirmed lesion outbreaks at six and twelve months compared to patients receiving placebo (p=0.0001).
