Uzbekistan has three refineries with a combined capacity of 222,000 b/d which, however, are operating way below their capacity. About 95,000 b/d of the products from these plants' output used to be exported to neighbouring CIS states. But now Uzbekistan is importing refined products from such states, with local consumption averaging 160,000 b/d of crude oil equivalent and production of liquids being less than 95,000 b/d.
The latest plant to come on stream was the Bukhara refinery, commissioned in November 1997 with a capacity of 50,000 b/d which cost over $400m. This refinery, which processes both heavy crude oil and condensate, can be expanded to 100,000 b/d. ...
