Mints that destroy the bacteria responsible for bad breath as effectively as mouthwash will be available from next month in the US. Eclipse mints and chewing gums, already starting to appear in US stores, actually kill the bugs associated with halitosis, unlike most mints and gums, which merely mask bad odours, according to the manufacturer Wrigley. In tests, the mints--which contain an extract of magnolia tree bark (MBE)--were reported to kill as many bacteria as a commercial Listerine mouthwash (J Agric Food Chem 2007, 55, 9465).
