Sir Michael Marmot, PhD, MPH, MBBS, FRCP, FFPHM, FMedSci, is chair of the World Health Organization's Commission on Social Determinants of Health, which was launched in March 2005 and brings together some of the world's leading scientists and practitioners to address the social conditions that shape people's health. In late August, the commission released a new report, "Closing the Gap in a Generation: Health Equity Through Action on the Social Determinants of Health," which found that "social injustice is killing people on a grand scale."
